Nov. Themed Show: Polygamy

He Will Destroy Her: Polygamy, the New and Everlasting Covenant

Thru November and December we honor all the women throughout history and today that are subjugated by men who claim to be holy. And to those who refused to be subjugated – even under penalty of death.

Meet the Artists

We are honored to feature the art of these talented individuals and the courage they embody to speak of truths that deeply personal and often painful.

Emma: Wife 1 of 49 – c.2024

Sage Turk

Whatever your view of Emma Smith and her role in the proceedings of the early church, It is impossible to not feel deep empathy for the women whose husband, under the supposed command of God Almighty, took upon himself 48 other women and girls (Each is represented by an arrow – the girls who were under the age of 18 are represented by Red Arrows). She was a woman who was forced to not only endure – but often officiate at these ‘spiritual weddings’. A women who after the passing of her Joseph was so traumatized by the proceedings, refused to acknowledge having ever been a part of polygamy, much less call it holy.

Fetter’d Bird (or The Giving of Helen Mar Kimball by Her Parents to the Prophet Joseph Smith) – c. 2024

Sage Turk

At the age of 14, Helen Mar Kimball’s father, Heber C. Kimball, and her mother, Vilate, approached their only daughter with news of a revelation. The prophet of their new faith, Joseph Smith, has selected Helen to be one of his plural wives. She was given 24 hours to decide if she would obey and was informed that an angel with a flaming sword awaited their family should she choose incorrectly. And thus she became the second 14 year old wedded to Joseph Smith Jr. – a lamb sacrificed by her own Polygamous Parents. For the rest of her life she would pine for the youthful innocence and freedom that was stolen from her as evidenced by the following poem she wrote as an elderly woman:

Thy happy dreams all o’er thou’st doom’d also to be
Bar’d out from social scenes by this thy destiny,
And o’er thy sad’nd mem’ries of sweet departed joys
Thy sicken’d heart will brood and imagine future woes,
And like a fetter’d bird with wild and longing heart,
Thou’lt dayly pine for freedom and murmor at thy lot; — Helen Mar Kimball

The Beginning of Benevolent Sexism – c.2024

Ashley Savage

This lithograph series is heavily inspired by the written work of Skyler McKellar in a Prodigal Press issue. She sums up my thoughts so succinctly: “I think about the innumerable amount of women who’ve devoted their entire souls to a church that deems them too holy to lead. I’m filled with unspeakable rage. The truth is that women are good, sacred, and worthy of so much praise. But women are also deeply complex human beings who deserve a break from the pedestal.” Thus, we are tied to Eve and her story. The beginning of the pedestal, and the beginning of benevolent sexism.

She Vessel – c.2024

Ashley Savage

Something you can touch and admire, but something otherwise quite powerless. Does her shape provoketh? Or is she more than a vessel?

bonded through & through – c.2024

Ashley Savage

The women of my past call me and pull at my hands. I melt into them and we are one. After all, we are cursed just the same.

finding self – c.2024

Ashley Savage

A recent self-portrait. My Self has been molded by generations of stubborn Mormon women. I cherish their courage and am still reconciling how their history deeply intertwines with mine.

He Put the Yoke Upon Her – c.2022

Shelby Shields

Fanny Alger was the first of Joseph’s affairs and thus first to be yoked with the dishonor of ushering in the era of the “Spiritual Wifery” – a practice that reduces women to cattle, property to be bartred and traded by men, a practice that exists to this day. She was only 16 years old .

Pray / Prey – c.2024

Sage Turk

Generation after generation women find themselves bound by patriarchal religions into positions of pure subjugation. When will these bindings be cut? And when will we no longer see such coersion as ‘holy’?
